Windom Ridge Rhapsody

by Lennie Niehaus

Windom Ridge Rhapsody is a contemporary composition written in a large rondo (A-B-A-C-A) song form. After a majestic introduction, the “A” section contains a playful melody played by the clarinets (in the chalumeau register) and the baritone horn, with the low brass playing an ostinato figure. The “B” section moves from one group of instruments to another and a great deal of syncopation is heard. There is a return to the “A” section which is written in tutti style with an extension and leads into the “C” section; a slower, expressive section with beautiful chords and quite a few key changes. This section features a trumpet solo and developes to a full treatment of the melody, then lightens up compositionally before a return to the last statement of the “A” section. An extension of this section leads to a return of the introductory material and a full, majestic ending.
